(i) Anthropogenic activities mainly cause ozone layer depletion.
(ii) Chlorofluoro carbons (CFCs) is the main cause of ozone layer depletion by releasing excess chlorine and bromine. Other ozone depleting substances are hydrobromo fluoro carbons and methyl bromide.
Effects:
(i) It allows UV rays to penetrate into atmosphere, resulting premature aging of skin and wrinking of skin.
(ii) It may cause suppression of immune system.
(iii) It causes skin cancer (melanoma) and chronic effects leading to eye damage.
(iv) The free radicals and reactive oxygen and photons can damage DNA itself.
