A carbonyl compound react with HCN to form a cyanohydrin which on hydrolysis forms a racemic mixture of alpha- hydroxy acids. The carbonyl compound is

A

formaldehyde

B

acetaldehyde

C

acetone

D

diethyl ketone

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Acetaldehyde cyanohydrin `CH_3 overset("*")CH(OH)CN` and lactic acid `(CH_3 overset("*")CHOHCOOH)` which it gives on hydrolysis contain a chiral carbon and hence exist as racemic mixtures. All other compounds are symmetrical and hence their cyanohydrins and the correspondinga-hydroxy acids are not optically active because they do not contain a chiral carbon.
