An organic compound 'X' having molecular...

An organic compound 'X' having molecular formula `C_5H_(10)O` yields phenylhydrazone and gives negative response to the iodoform test and Tollens' test. It produces n-pentane on reduction. 'X' could be

A

3-pentanone

B

n-amyl alcohol

C

pentanal

D

2-pentanone

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

Since X(`C_5H_(10)O)` forms a phenylhydrazone but does not give Tollens’ test, it cannot be an aldehyde but must be a ketone. Since (X) on reduction gives n-pentane, therefore, it must be a straight chain ketone. Since (X) does not give, iodoform test, it can not be a methyl ketone. Therefore, it must be 3-pentanone.
`underset("3-pentanone")(CH_3CH_2-overset(O)overset(||)C-CH_2CH_3) overset("Reduction")to underset("n-pentane")(CH_3CH_2CH_2CH_2CH_3)`
