The behaviour of the plant cells with regard to water movement depends on the following solution:
Hypotonic solution: If the external : solution is having less concentration than that of the cell sap, the solution is called a hypotonic solution. This causes endosmosis and thus swelling of the cell takes place.
Hypertonic solution: If the osmotic concentration of the solution is more than that of the cell sap, the solution is called a hypertonic solution. This causes the exosmosis and thus the cell shrinks. This shrinkage of the cell is called plasmolysis.
Isotonic solution: If the osmotic concentration of both the solution as well as the cell sap is same, no net movement takes place.
