Determine the resistance of a copper wire having a length of 1 km and diameter of 0.5 mm

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`rho=` Resistivity of copper `=1.7xx10^(-8) Omega m`
Converting all measures into metres.
`L = 1 km =1000 m = 10^(3) m`
`d=0.5 mm = 0.5 xx10^(-3) m`
If r is the radius of the wire then, its area of cross-section
`A = pi r^(2)`
`therefore A = pi xx ((d)/(2))^(2)`
`=(pi)/(4) (0.5xx10^(-3))^(2)m^(2)=0.2xx10^(-6) m^(2)`
`R = rho (L)/(A) =(1.7xx10^(-8) Omega m xx (10^(3)m))/(0.2xx10^(-6)m^(-2))=85 Omega`
