The equilibrium, `SO_(2)Cl_(2)(g) hArr SO_(2) (g) + Cl_(2) (g)` is attained at 298 K in a closed container and an inert gas, He is introduced. Which of the following is/are correct?

A

Concentration of `SO_(2) (g), Cl_(2) (g) and SO_(2)Cl_(2)(g)` remain unchanged

B

More `Cl_(2)(g)` is formed

C

Concentration of `SO_(2)`(g) is reduced

D

More `SO_(2)Cl_(2)(g)` is formed

The correct Answer is:
A

When inert gas added at constant volume
(i) The total pressure increases proportionally to the moles of inert gas added.
`P prop n ` [V & T = Constant]
(ii) Mole fraction of each species decreases proportionally to the moles of inert gas added.
Hence partial pressure of each species remains the same and there is no effect on equilibrium state at all.
