In the double displacement reaction between aqueous potassium iodide and aqueous lead nitrate, a yellow precipitate of lead iodide is formed. While performing the activity if lead nitrate is not available, which of the following can be used in place of lead nitrate?

A

Lead sulphate (insoluble)

B

Lead acetate

C

Ammonium nitrate

D

Potassium sulphate

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
b

Lead acetate can be used in place of lead nitrate because like lead nitrate, it is also a soluble salt in water. The reaction is as follows :
`Pb(CH_(3)COO)_(2) +2KI to 2PbI_(2) +2CH_(3)CO O^(-)K^(+)`
Lead sulphate is insoluble in water and will not dissociate into `Pb^(2+)` ions, so it cannot be used.
