Golden rice is a transgenic variety of rice with an elevated level of `beta`-carotene (provitamin-A), a precursor of vitamin-A. The genes encoding the enzymes of the `beta`-carotene biosynthetic pathway are introduced into rice plant cells in culture. The transgenic rice plants generated produce rice with `beta`-carotene.
