Describe briefly recombinant DNA technology.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Detailed studies of structure and function of the gene at the molecular level requires large quantities of individual gene in its pure form. A variety of techniques, often referred to as recombinant DNA technology, are used in DNA cloning, which permits researchers to prepare large number of similar DNA molecules. Recombinant DNA is defined as simply any DNA, which is composed of sequences derived from different sources. The key to cloning a DNA molecule is to link it with a vector DNA molecule.
The process of recombinant DNA technology contains various techniques. It involves generation of DNA fragments carried out with the help of the following processes
(i) Isolation of genetic material (DNA)
(ii) Cutting of DNA at specific locations
(iii) Joining of DNA fragment
(iv) Insertion of DNA into host cell
(v) Selection and screening of transformed cell.
