An organic compound with molecular mass...

An organic compound with molecular mass 180 contains 40% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen and 53.3% oxygen. Find its empirical formula .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) Dividing the percentage of each element by its respective atomic mass .
`C = (40)/(12) = 3.33, H = (6.7)/(1) = 6.7`
`C: H : O = 3.33 : 6.7:3.33`
(b) Dividing the ratio by the least number
`C:H:O = (3.33)/(3.33) : (6.7)/(3.33) : (3.33)/(3.33)`
` = 1 : 2: 1`
Hence , the empirical formula of the organic compound is `CH_(2)O`
