The given molecular formula `C_2H_4O` of aldehyde is written as CH, -CHO. Hence the formula of alcohol from which this is obtained by oxidation must be `CH_3-CH-OH`. The two reactions can, therefore, be represented as follows .
`underset("(Ethyl alcohol)")(2CH_3-CH_2-OH)overset(2Na)rarrunderset(("Sodium ethoxide"))(2CH_3-CH_2O^(Theta)Na^(o+))+H_2uarr`
`underset("(Ethyl alcohol)")(CH_3-CH_2-OH)overset([O])underset("PCC")rarrunderset(("Acetaldehyde"))(CH_3-CHO+H_2O)`
