Assertion: Variations are important for the process of evolution.
Reason: Meiosis increases the genetic variability in the population of organisms from one generation ot the next.

The correct Answer is:
B

Meiosis involves exhange of genes between homologous chormosomes. So, the gametes produced are genetically different from each other. Offspring produced by the fusion of gametes also show recombination of genetic variations. These variations in the offspring make organisms more adaptable to the enviroment and these have a definite role in evolution.

Assertion : Asexual reproduction is more important with regard to biotehnology. Reason : Asexual reproduction preserves the genetic information while sexual reporduction permits variations.

Assertion :Species with low genetic variability are generally at greater risk of extinction than the species with more genetic variability. Reason: Species with low genetic variability are more vulnerable to disease, predators or other environmental challenges.

Assertion : In most angiosperms, microspores of a tetrad grow and separate from one another shortly after meiosis. Reason : In the members of families Orchidaceae and Asclepiadaceae, all the pollen grains of a sporangium remain united to form a compact structure called pollinium.

Study the following statements regarding food chains and select the correct ones. (i) Removal of 80% tigers from an area resulted in greatly increased growth of vegetation. (ii) Removal of most of the carnivores resulted in an increased population of deers. (iii) The lenght of food chains is generally limited to 3-4 trophic levels due to energy loss. (iv) The lenght of food chains may vary from 2 to 8 trophic levels. A) i and ii B) ii and iii C) i and iii D) iii and iv

Assertion : Genetic variation shown by the plant Rauwolfia vomitoria growing in different Himalayan ranges is very important economically. Reason : The amount and variety of alkaloids presents in this plant, change both between the Rauwolfia species and between the different strains of R. vomitoria.

Assertion : Although geitonogamy is functionally crosspollination involving a pollinating agent, genetically it is similar to autogamy. Reason : In geitonogamy, pollen grains from the anthers of one flower are transferred to the sigma of another flower borne on the same plant.

Assertion : Downstream processing is generally considered more difficult and costlier in plants than that in microbes. Reason : Rhizosecretion is used as a method to facilitate easier recovery of recombinant proteins from plants.
