D

Let the sum of ages of his two children = x years.
Then, the age of the father = 3x years.
According to the question, `3x + 20 = x +40 `
or, `2x = 20 `
or, `x = 10`
Therefore, the age of father `= 3x = 3 xx 10 `years = 30 years
