Why are some substances biodegradable and some non-biodegradable?

Substances which can be broken down into simpler substances by the biological means are called biodegradable substances. For example, Cotton, wood, paper, wool, etc. Substances which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by biological means are called non-biodegradable substances.
