While diluting an acid, why is it recommended that the acid should be added to water and not water to the acid?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The process of diluting an acid is highly exothermic, and on the addition of acid to the water the excess heat is absorbed by water.
Diluting an acid is an exothermic process. When water is added to an acid, the heat generated may cause the mixture to splash out and may cause serious burns. Therefore, it is recommended that acid should be added to water carefully with constant stirring.
