When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (brine).
Chlor - alkali process
`X - Cl_(2)`
`Y = CaOCl_(2)`
`2NaCl(aq) + 2H_(2)O(I) rarr 2NaOH(aq) + Cl_(2)(g) + H_(2)(g)`
`Ca(OH)_(2) + Cl_(2) rarr CaOCl_(2) + H_(2)O`
When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (brine), it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide.
`underset("Sodium chloride")(2NaCl)(aq) + 2H_(2)O(l) rarr underset("Sodium hydroxide")(2NaOH(aq)) + underset((X))(Cl_(2)(g)) + H_(2)(g)`
Sodium hydroxide (x) This process is called as chor-alkali process. In the manufacture of sodium hydroxide, hydrogen gas and chlorine gas (X) are formed as byproducts. When chlorine gas (X) reacts with lime water, it forms calcium oxychloride (bleaching powder) Y. The reaction is :
`underset("(Slaked lime)")underset("Lime water")(Ca(OH)_(2)(aq)) + Cl_(2)(g) rarr underset((Y))underset("Calcium hydroxide")(CaOCl_(2)(aq)) + H_(2)O(l)`
Y is Calcium oxychloride, which is used as bleaching agent in the chemical industry.
