5 g of solid adsorbent is dropped in a container of `1.5 L N_2` gas at 1 atm and 300K. The pressure of `N_2` is reduced to 20%. The mass of nitrogen (in g) adsorbed per gram of adsorbent is______. [Given: `R = 0.08L`. atm `K^(-1) "mol"^(-1)`]

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
`0.28`

`P = 1(1 xx 20/100) = 0.8` atm
According to ideal gas equation,
`PV = nRT` or `PV = w/M RT`,
`therefore` Weight of `N_2` adsorbed by solid `=(P xx V xx M)/(R xx T)`
`= (0.8 xx 1.5 xx 28)/(0.08 xx 300)`
`= 1.4 g` of `N_(2)`
`therefore x/m = (1.4 g)/(5 g) = 0.28`
