In females of placental mammals, there are cyclical changes in ovaries, accessory reproductive ducts and hormones during the reproductive phase. In non-primate mammals like cows, sheep, rats, deer, dogs, tiger, etc., such cyclical changes during reproduction are called oestrous cycle. It consists of a short period of oestrous or heat (e.g., 12-24 hours in cow) followed by anoestrous or passive period. Sex urge is increased and the female permits copulation only during oestrous period.
