The correct Answer is:
A

Domestic sewage is rich in biodegradable organic matter and the decomposition of this organic matter by microorganisms require oxygen. Microorganisms involved in biodegradation of organic matter in the receiving water body consume a lot of oxygen, and as a result there is a sharp decline in dissolved oxygen, and as a result there is a sharp decline in dissolved oxygen downstream from the point of sewage discharge. If sewage quantiy is large, the whole of dissolved oxygen may be consumed leaving nothing for respiration for fish and other clean water organisms. They, therefore, get killed. However, as sewage is decomposed, there is a gradual rise in dissolved oxygen downstream. Fish and other clean water organisms reappear indicating the recovery of river from sewage pollution.

Assertion: Elchhornia crassipes increases the oxygen content of water bodies. Reason: Anoxic condition in water boidies leads to Eutrophication.

Assertion (A ) : Forest act as oxygen sinks and heart of the planet Reason (R ): Forest animals consume lot of oxygen for their respiration .

Read the following statements and select the correct option. Statement 1 : BOD represents the amount of dissolved oxygen that would be consumed if all the organic matter in one litre of water were oxidised by microorganisms. Statement 2 : High value of BOD indicates that water is highly polluted by organic matter.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) may not be a good index for pollution for water bodies receiving effluents from:

Assertion: The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) is high in raw sewage. Reason: The greater the BOD in waste water, the lesser is its polluting potential.

Assertion (A) : Abscission is a physiological process of shedding of organs like leaves, flowers fruits and seeds from the parent plant body. Reason (R ) : When leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds are removed, the plant seals off its vascular system to prevent loss of water and nutrients.
