Enlist the functions of endoplasmic reticulum.

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) forms the inter cellular transport system of cell. Rough ER is involved in the synthesis and transport of proteins. Smooth ER performs the function of synthesis of lipids. ER provides larger surface area for the metabolic processes to take place. Proteins and lipids synthesized in this organelle serve the purpose of synthesis of plasma membrane for the newly formed cells during cell division.
