Explain the structures of: Mitochodria

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Mitochondria is rod-shaped double membrane structure.
Outer membrane is smooth and inner membrane is folded and is selectively permeable.
A large number of finger-like structures formed as a result of folding of inner membrane are present called cristae.
Cristae bear small bat-shaped structures called elementary particles or oxysomes which are rich in enzymes.
Cristae provide large surface area for efficient functioning.
Inner cavity is filled with proteinaceous gel like matrix.
They contain their own DNA known as mitochondrial DNA.
