Young stems (twigs) bend but do not break. Why?

In young stems (twigs), the tissue that gives flexibility and tensile strength to the plant is collenchyma. It is a living tissue with thickened corners made up of cellulose which provide mechanical support to young plant, hence the stems bend but do not break.
