What are the respective roles of chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b in the process of photosynthesis?

Text Solution

Chlorophyll a contains magnesium as the central ion and is the principal pigment. It absorbs the visible light and causes the excitation of the electrons in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll (b) is an accessory pigment which absorbs light when the intensity of light is low. It also aids in the transfer of light energy absorbed by chlorophyll (a) to the site of light reactions.
