How did Weismann's germplasm theory disprove Lamarckism?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Lamarckism is mainly based on use and disuse theory. According to this theory, the organs that are used continuously will become more developed and the organs that are not useful in the changed environmental conditions get degenerated in the organ isms. These characteristics developed in the organisms as adaptations to the changed mode of life are called acquired characters. These are passed on to the next generations by inheritance. This is the concept of inher itance of acquired characters. According to germplasm theory, the characters corre sponding to somatic cells cannot be inher ited. The characters corresponding to germ cells can only be inherited.
