Analysis show that nickel oxide consists of nickel ion with `96%` ions having `d^(8)` configuration and `4%` having `d^(7)` configuration. Which amongst the following best represents the formula of the oxide?

A

`Ni_(1.02)O_(1.00)`

B

`Ni_(0.96)O_(1.00)`

C

`Ni_(0.98)O_(0.98)`

D

`Ni_(0.98)O_(1.00)`

The correct Answer is:
D

`Ni = 3d^(8) 4s^(2)` (At. No. `= 28`),
`:. Ni^(2+) = 3d^(8)` and `Ni^(3+) = 3d^(7)`
Hence, `96%` ion of `Ni^(2+)` and `4%` ions of `Ni^(3+)` are present.
Let number of `O^(2-)` ion present in the crystal `= x`.
Applying electroneutrality rule,
Total positive charge `=` Total negative charge
`= 96 xx 2 (+ve "charge") + 4 xx 3 (+ve "charge")`
`= x + 2 (-ve "charge")`
`:. 96 xx 2 + 4 xx 3 - 2 x = 0`
`:. x = 1.02`
So formula of crystal `Ni_(1.00)O_(1.02)` or `Ni_(0.98)O_(1.00)`.

Atoms of eight elements A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H have the same number of electronic shells but different in their outermost shells. It was found that elements A and G combine to form an ionic compound which can also be extracted from sea water. Oxides of the elements A and B are basic in nature while those of E and F are acidic. The oxide of elements D is almost neutral. Answer the following questions based on the information given here in : (i) To which group or period of the periodic table do the listed elements belong ? (ii) Which one of the eight elements is likely to be a noble gas? (iii) Which one of the eight elements would have the largest atomic radius ? (iv) Which two elements amongst these are likely to be the non-metals? (v) Which one of these eight elements is likely to be a semi-metal or metalloid ?

Examine structures through a to j, shown below, with respect to their symmetry or lack of it. Assume that the five-membered rings and the ring in compound g are planar. The wedge-hatched bonds in b, c, d & e designate specific configurations. Also, for the acyclic compounds assume stable anti conformations. Answer each of the following questions by writing letters (a through j), corresponding to your selections, in each answer box. If there is no structure that fits the description enter an x in the answer box. Which structures have a plane of symmetry?
