Molal elevation constant (K(b)) values o...

Molal elevation constant `(K_(b))` values of following alcohols are in the order:
`CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(2)OHgt(CH_(3))_(2)CH-CH_(2)OHgt(CH_(3))_(3)C-OH`
Explain in brief.

Text Solution

Moving from `CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(2)OH` to `(CH_(3))_(3)C-OH` via `(CH_(3))_(2)CHCH_(2)OH`, the branching increases, the surface area decreases resulting into decrease in van der Waal's force and hence boiling point,
`K_(b) = (RT_(b)^(2)Mw_(A))/(1000H_(v))`,
molecular weight `(Mw_(A))` remains the same for all three alcohols. According to Trouton's rule, `(Delta_(v)H)//T_(b)` is almost constant for all the liquids of almost similar kind of association.
Thus, `(RMw_(A)T_(b))/(1000H_(v))` is constant and `(K_(b) prop T_(b))`.
