Achievement motivation refers to the level of one’s motivation to engage in achievement behaviours, based on the interaction of determinants such as need for success, the expectancy of success, and the incentive value of success. In other words, one’s tendency to approach success (Ts) is a product of three motivational factors: the need for achievement, also known as the motive for success, the probability of success and the incentive value of success. The motive for success(Ms) is one’s need for achievement. It is manifested when the situation allows a person to feel responsible for the outcome, when there is feedback of results and when there is some risk of failing. Probability of success(Ps) is one’s expectancy of achieving the goal. A person’s expectation about reaching a goal through a given behaviour will be based on his experience in similar situations in the past. Incentive value of success(Is) relates to the pride a person will feel in achieving the goal. This depends on the difficulty of the goal. The accomplishment of a difficult goal has a greater incentive value than the accomplishment of an easy goal.
