E. The statements are not sufficient. Statement I is not sufficient because though `x gt y` when the numbers are positive, the opposite would happen if the numbers are negative. ( Consider `x = 10, y =5` as on case and `x = -20, y = -10` as another). Also, it is easy to see that even I is not sufficient.
