1) Metabolic products that have identifiable functions in the host are called primary metabolites. Ex : Amino acids, sugars etc.
2) Metabolic products that do not have identifiable functions in the host are called secondary metabolites Ex : Pigments, rubber, alkaloids, essential oils etc.
