Chloroplasts are double membrane bound. The space limited by the inner membrane of the chloroplast is called stroma. In the stroma, flattened membrane sacs called Thylakoids are present. Thylakoids are arranged in stacks like a piles of coins called grana. In addition there are flat membranous tubules called the stroma lamellae connecting the thylakoids of the different grana. The space in the thylakoids is called lumen. The stroma cotains enzymes for the synthesis of carbohydrates and protein Dark reaction takes place in stroma. It also contain circular DNA and ribosomes. Thylakoids contain photosynthetic pigment. In it light reaction occurs.
