What conditions enable "RuBisco" to function as oxygenase ? Explain the ensuing process,

Text Solution

RuBisCO is characterised by the fact that its active site can bind to both `CO_(2)`, and `O_(2)`. It is the relative concentration of `O_(2)`, and `CO_(2)` that determines which of the two will bind to the enzyme. If `O_(2)`, concentration is more, RuBisCO function as Oxygenase, it binds with `O_(2)`, and instead of forming 2 molecules of PGA, it forms one i molecule of phosphoglycerate and phosphoglycolate. This pathway is called photorespiration.
In photorespiration pathway, sugars or ATP are not formed, moreover there is a release of `CO_(2)`, with the utilisation of ATP. Therefore photorespiration is a wasteful process.
