Explain the reactions of `Cl_(2)` with NaOH.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Chlorine is prepared in the laboratory by heating concentrated Hydrochlorinc acid with Manganese dioxide.
`MnO_2 + 4HCI to MnCI_2 + Cl_2 + 2H_2 O`
It can also be prepared by heating a mixture of sodium chloride and concentrated `H_(2) SO_(4)`.
`4NaCI + MnO_(2) + 4H_(2) SO_(4) to MnCI_(2) + 4NaHSO_(4) + 2H_(2) O+ CI_(2)`
Reactions :
Hot NaOH: When `CI_2` gas is passed through hot concentrated `NaOH`, sodium chloride and sodium chlorate are formed.
`6NaOH + 3CI_2 to 5NaCI + NaCIO_(3) + 3H_(2) O`
