Kolbe.s synthesis: When sodium salt of phenol (sodium phenoxide) is heated with carbon dioxide under pressure, a carboxylic group is introduced in the aromatic ring preferably. at ortho position with respect to phenollic group. The sodium salt of o-hydroxybenzoic acid (sodium salicylate) formed, when treated with acid yields salicylic acid.
