How are `XeF_(2) and XeF_(4)` prepared ? Give their structures.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Xenon flurides are prepared by the direct combination of Xenon and Fluorine under appropriate conditions.
`Xe(g) + F_(2) (g) underset("1bar") overset("673K") (to) XeF_(2) (s)`
`underset("(1:5 ratio)") (Xe(g) + 5F_(2)) underset("7bar") overset("873K") (to) XeF_(4) (s)`
a) In `XeF_2, Xe` undergoes `sp^(3) d` hybridisation

There are three bond pairs and two lone pairs. The two bond pairs overlap end-end with `2P_z` orbitals of two F atoms. Thus `XeF_2` molecule has linear structure.
b) `XeF_4` is square planar. Xe undergoes `sp^(3) d^(2)` hybridisation.
