A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved ...

A salt X is formed and a gas is evolved when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate. Name the salt X and the gas evolved. Describe an activity and draw the diagram of the apparatus to prove that the evolved gas is the one which you have named. Also, write the chemical equation of the reaction involved.

When ethanoic `(CH_(3)COOH)` acid reacts with sodium hydrogen carbonate `(NaHCO_(3))`, it forms sodium ethanoate `(CH_(3)COONa)` , water and carbon dioxide gas .Therefore ,salt X is sodium ethanoate and the gas evolved is `CO_(2)` .The chemical equation of the reaction involved is,
`CH_(3)COOH+NaHCO_(3)toCH_(3)COONa+H_(2)O+CO_(2)` Activity to prove the gas evolved is `CO_(2)` in above reaction :
Take a test tube and a bent tube. Take ethanoic acid and sodium bicarbonate solution in the test tube. Insert the bent tube in the cork and fit the cork at the mouth of the test tube. Fill lime water in the bent tube so that lime water is in the .U. portion of this tube. After sometime, it is observed that the lime water turns milky. This confirms that the evolved gas is carbon dioxide. As we know that when carbon dioxide is passed through lime water, the lime water turns milky. This is taken as the confirmatory test for evolution of carbon dioxide.
