Alkaline hydrolysis of an ester in the presence of a strong base like sudium hydroxide is called as saponification. It results the formation of corresponding salts of carboxylic acids and alcohol. This can be shown by following equation :
`CH_(3)COOC_(2)H_(5)+NaOHtoCH_(3)COONa+C_(2)H_(5)OH`
