Earth receives `1400 W m ^-2` of solar power. If all the solar energy falling on lens of area `0.2m^2` is focussed on to a block of ice of mass 280 g , then what is the time (in min) taken by the ice to melt completely ? `[L_("fusion")=3.3xx105 J kg ^-1]`

The correct Answer is:
`5.5`

Heat required to melt the block
`= (0.28 kg) ( 3.3 xx 10 ^(5) J //kg) = 9.24 xx 10^(4) J`
Here received per second `= (14000 J // m ^(2) ) ( 0.2 m ^(2)) = 280 J`
Time taken (in minutes) `= ( 9.24 xx 10 ^(4))/( 280 xx 60) = 5. 5`

It takes 20 minutes to melt 10 g of ice, when ray from the sun are focused by a lens of diameter 5 cm on to a block of ice. Calcualate the heat received from the sun of 1cm^(2) per minute. (Given, L = 80 kcal/kg)

A surface of area 1 m^(2) kept perpendicular to the sun rays absorbs 3 MJ solar energy in one hour. (a) What is the amount of solar energy absorbed by a solar heater when a surface of area of 9 cm^(2) is exposed perpendicular to the sun rays for 4 hours. (b) What is amount of time taken by this heater to boil 12 kg of water at 40^(@)C if its efficiency is 60% ? specific heat capacity of water =4200 J kg^(-1) .^(@)C^(-1)

One end of a steel rod (K=46Js^(-1)m^(-1) ^(@)C^(-1) of length 1.0m is kept in ice at 0^(@)C and the other end is kept in boiling water at 100^(@)C . The area of cross section of the rod is 0.04cm^(2) . Assuming no heat loss to the atmosphere, find the mass of the ice melting per second. Latent heat of fusion of ice =3.36xx10^(5)Jkg^(-1) .
