A bar magnetic dipole moment M is cut into two equal pieces as shown, magnetic moment of each piece is

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Magnetic moment of the magnet, M = 2lm
i) When the magnet is cut along its axis, length remains same but pole strength becomes m/2.
Now the magnetic moment of each piece `= 2l xx (m)/(2) = (M)/(2)`
ii) When the magnet is cut along its equatorial line, pole strength remains same but length becomes
` (2l)/(2)`
Now the magnetic moment of each piece `=(2l)/(2) xx m =(M)/(2)`
