Explain giving reason:
(i) Treansition metals and their compounds generally exhibit a paramagnetic behave .
(ii) The chemistry of actinoids is not so smooth as that of lanthanoids.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Transition elements have relatively low ionization energies and have one or two electrons in their outermost energy level `(ns^(1) or ns^(2))`. As a result, metallic bonds are formed . Hence, they behave as metals.
(ii) There is a gerater range of oxidation states, which is in part attributed to the fact that the 5f,6d and 7s levels are of comparable energies.
