'X' is a chemical present in our stomach and is necessary for digestion of food. When 'X' is secreted in excess, it causes health problems like indigestion. 'Y' is a chemical used to treat this condition. What could be X and Y ?

A

X is milk of magnesia and Y is ascorbic acid

B

X is hydrochloric acid and Y is sodium carbonate

C

X is milk of magnesia and Y is hydrochloric acid

D

X is hydrochloric acid and Y is milk of magnesia

The correct Answer is:
D

The chemical X present in our stomach is hydrochloric acid (HCI). If this acid is secreted in excess, it causes health problems like indigestion.
Milk of magnesia (Y) is used to treat this condition. Because, being a base, it neutralises the excess HCI produced in the stomach.
