A proton projected in a magnetic field of 0.020 T travels along a helical path of radius 5.0 cm and pitch 20 cm. Find the components of the velocity of the proton along and perpendicular to the magnetic field. Take the mass of the proton` =1.6X10^(-27)`kg.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`B = 0.02T , m_(p) = 1.6 xx 110^(-27) kg`.
`p = 20cm = 2 xx 10^(-1) m`
`Redius r = 5 cm = 5 xx 10^(-2) m`
We know for a belical path the velocity of the proton has got o components `V_(1)and V_(11)`
`r = 5 xx 10^(-2) m`,
` V_(1) = 1 xx 10^(6) m/s`
However the weioght remains constant
`Pitch = (V_(11) 2 pi r )/(V_(1)`
`V_(11) = V_(1)P) /(2 pi r) = 0.6369 xx 10^(6)`
`= 6.4 xx 10 ^(4) m/s`
