The passenger of example slept with his head towards the engine and feet towards the guard's coach. If he measured 6 ft in the train frame, how tall is he in the ground frame ?

Text Solution

In the ground frame, the passanger is moving with a velocity c / 10 . His length is thus contacterd. The length measured in the train frame is the rest length of the passenger as the passenger is at rest in the train. Thus , his length in the ground frame is
` L' = 6 ft (sqrt 1 - (1 / 10 )^(2)) = 6 ft (sqrt 99 / 100 ) = 5 feet 11.6 inches`.

Ravi is 1.82m tall. He wants to find the height of a tree in his backyard. From the tree’s base he walked 12.20 m. along the tree’s shadow to a position where the end of his shadow exactly overlaps the end of the tree’s shadow. He is now 6.10m from the end of the shadow. How tall is the tree ?

In a beautiful valley, there was a village. When trains passed from the village, the whistle and the sound of train, mixed with the sound of waterfall, seemed to be very pleasant to everyone. Hence, children of that village used to play near the railway track. Once on a very light foggy day, a group of children found that a fish plate was missing from the track. As such, all the villagers were worried. Prashant, one of the children, suddenly put his ear to the line and tried to know whether a train is coming or not. He knew a train is coming. He asked his friends to inform the railway cabin crew and he himself put off his red shirt and started running towards the train, waving his red shirt. The driver and cabin man got the alert signal in time and thus a major accident was averted. Why did Prashant use his red shirt instead of any other coloured shirts ?

A 1.5m tall boy is standing at some distance from a 30m tall building. The angle of elevation from his eyes to the top of the building increase from 30^(@) " to " 60^(@) as he walks towards the building. Find the distance he walked towards the building.

A siren placed at a railway platform is emitting sound of frequency 5 kHz . A passenger sitting in a moving train A records a frequency of 5.5kHz while the train approaches the siren. During his return journey in a different train B he records a frequency of 6.0 kHz while approaching the same siren. the ratio the velocity of train B to that of train A is

Two speakers are driven by the same oscillator with frequency of 200 Hz. They are located 4 m part on a vertical pole. A man walks straight towards the lower speaker in a direction perpendicular to the pole, as shown in figure. (i) How many times will he hear a minimum in sound intensity, and (ii) how far is he from the pole and at these moments ? Take the speed of sound to be 330 m/s, and ignore any sound reflections coming off the ground. .
