Palladium(II) tends to form complexes wi...

Palladium(II) tends to form complexes with a coordination number of 4. One such compound was originaly formuklatd as `PdCL_(2).3NH_(3)` supose an aqueous solution of the compound is treated with exces `AgNO_(3(aq))`, how many moles of `AgCl_((s))` are formed per mole of `PdCl_(2).3NH_(3)`?

The correct Answer is:
`1`

Because of their change the Cl ions can be either in the coordination sphere where they are bonded directly to the metal, or outside the coordination sphere, where they are bonded ionically to the complex.
Because the `NH_(3)` ligands are neutral, they must be in the coordination sphere. So, the correct formula is `[Pd(NH_(3))_(3)Cl]Cl`. The chloride ion that serves as a ligand will not be precipitated as `AgCl_(s))`.Thus only the single
`Cl` which is outside the coordination sphere can react with `AgNO_(3)`
Therefore 1mol of `AgCl_((0))` is formed per mole of the complex.
