The oil and gas industry in India started since 1889 when the first oil deposits in the country were discovered near the town of Digboi in the state of Assam. There many states in the country which produce and have crude oil reserves these are Assam, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. India was the third top net crude oil importer in 2018.
