Why do atoms share electrons in covalent bonds?

A

To increase their atomic numbers

B

To attain a noble-gas electron configuration

C

To become more polar

D

To become ions and attract each other

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Covalent bonding occurs when pairs of electrons are shared by atoms. Atoms will covalently bond with other atoms in order to gain more stability, which is gained by forming a full electron shell. By sharing their outer most (valence) electrons, atoms can fill up their outer electron shell and gain stability. Elements forming covalent compounds achieve noble gas configuration by sharing electrons within the atoms, unlike ionic compounds which achieve the noble gas configuration either by gaining or losing electrons from the outermost electron shell.

Between ionic and covalent bonds, there are large majority of bonds, in which the bonding electrons are shared unequally between two atoms but are not completely transferred.Such bonds are said to be polar covalent bonds and the bond polarity is due to difference in electronegativity, the ability of an atom in a molecule to attract the shared electrons in a covalent bond. The measure of net polarity is a quantity called the dipole moment, mu , which is defined as the magnitude of the charge Q at either end of the molecular dipole times the distance r between the charges : mu=Qxxr .Molecular polarities give rise to some of the forces that occur between molecules and these forces are of several different types including dipole-dipole forces, London dispersion forces, and hydrogen bonds. All these intermolecular forces are electrical in origin and result from the mutual attraction of unlike charges or the mutual repulsion of like charges. Which of the following statements is incorrect ?

When two atoms share electrons, they form a bond called

Ionic bond is defined as the electrostatic force of attraction holding the oppositely charged ions. Ionic compounds are mostly crystalline solid having high melting and boiling points, electrical conductivity in moleten state, solubility in water etc. Covalent bond is defined as the force which binds atoms of same or different elements by mutual sharing of electrons in a covalent bond. Covalent compounds are solids, liquids or gases. They have low melting and boiling points compounds. They are more soluble in non-polar solvents. The valence electrons are involved in formation of covalent bonds is /are called :

Which one is covalent bond ?

Assertion (A) Hydrogen combines with order elements by losing, gaining or sharing of electrons. Reason (R ) Hydorgen forms electrovalent and covalent bonds with other elements.

Define a covalent bond.

Assertion : The atoms in a covalent molecule are said to share electrons, yet some covalent molecule are polar. Reason :In a polar covalent molecule , the shared electron spend more time on the average near one of the atoms .
