When 5 g of sulphur is burnt to `SO_(2)`, 46 kJ of heat is liberated. What is the enthalpy of formation of sulphur dioxide?

A

`+ 147.2` kJ

B

`-147.2` kJ

C

`-294.4` kJ

D

`+ 294.4` kJ

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

`S + O_(2) rarr SO_(2), Delta H_(f)= -4.6 kJ`
`because 0.5g` of sulphur on burning produce 1g of `SO_(2)`
`therefore` 32g of sulphur on burning produce 64g of `SO_(2)`
`Delta Delta H= (-4.6kJ) xx 64 = -294.4kJ`
