The co-ordination compound of which one of the following compositions will produce two equivalents of `AgCl` on reaction with aqueous silver nitrate solution

A

`CoCl_3 . 3NH_3`

B

`CoCl_3. 6NH_3`

C

`CoCl_3 . 4NH_3`

D

`CoCl_3. 5NH_3`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

The chloride ions which are present in the ionisation sphere get precipitated as AgCl on reaction with `AgNO_3`. Thus depending on the number of chloride present in the ionisation sphere will determine the no. of equivalents of AgCl produced.
`[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]Cl_2 + 2AgNO_3 to [Co(NH_3)_5Cl](NO_3)_2 + 2AgCl`
