The pH of a buffer solution containing 25 ml of 1 M `CH_(3)COONa " and 1 M " CH_(3)COOH` will be appreciably affected by

A

`1 " M " CH_(3)COOH`

B

`5 " M " CH_(3)COOH`

C

` 5 " M "HCl`

D

`1 " M "NH_(4)OH`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

It is an acid buffer for which there will be no change in pH if a small quantity of strong acid or strong base added .
`pH = pK_(a) +log. (["Salt"])/(["acid"])`
So if the concentration of [acid] `(CH_(3)COOH)` is increased appreciably then (25 milli equivalents in this case ) pH will decrease .
