What will happen if an animal cell is placed in hypertonic solution ?

A

Cell will swell

B

Cell will shrink

C

There will be no change in cell volume

D

Cell will dissolve

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Blood is isotonic with 0.16 M NaCl solution.
`0.16M NaCl-=(0.16xx(23+35.5))/(1000mL)g`
`=(9.36g)/(1000mL)`
= 0.936% (mass/volume)
So when a cell is placed into 0.4% NaCl solution the liquid will flow from the solution towards the cell. As a result cell will swell.
