What is the correct order of reactivity of alcohols in the following reaction ?
`R-OH+HCloverset(ZnCl_(2))rarrR-Cl+H_(2)O`

A

`1^@ gt 2^@ gt 3^@`

B

`1^@ lt 2^@ gt 3^@`

C

`3^@ gt 2^@ gt 1^@`

D

`3^@ gt 1^@ gt 2^@`

The correct Answer is:
C

The given reaction is nucleophilic substitution reaction in which `-OH` group is replaced by `-Cl`. Tertiary alcohols, when react with `HCl` in presence of `ZnCl_2`, form tertiary carbocation.
This intermediate 3° carbocation is more stable than 2° carbocation as well as 1° carbocation. Higher the stability of intermediate, higher will be the reactivity of reactant molecule.
So, the order of reactivity of alcohols in the given reaction is 3° > 2° > 1° .

Alcohols are acidic in nature because hydrogen is attached to oxygen which is an electronegative element. Alcohol is weaker acid than water because OH^(-) ion is more stable than R-O^(-) ion. R-O^(-) is less stable, due to +I effect of the alkyl group. Acidity of alcohols increases with increase in the stability of acid anion. Some alcohol like CH_(3)-OH, CF_(3)-CH_(2)-OH, (CF_(3))_(3)C-OH ae more acidic than water.
